Volunteer Opportunities

It's a new year and VFW Post 1454 is looking forward to new opportunities to serve our local Veterans, Active-Duty Military Personnel & our community. Our Post welcomes new ideas from our members, Auxilary and non-members interested in joining our cause. If you have an idea, we would love to hear it!
A Message For Non-Members
Many of our events are open to the public. You do not need to be a VFW or Auxilary member to be involved with our Post. There are volunteer opportunities for non-members too! We invite you to visit our Post to meet our members, learn about our organization and find out how you can take action in support of local Veterans. A great time to visit us is during our monthly meals. You'll find plenty of members on hand and a great meal at a reasonable price. We offer a monthly fish fry and farmer's breakfast throughout the winter months and a steak fry in the summer. Invite your friends and bring your family too!

Members & Auxiliary
Our Post has made many advancements in recent years. We added several new projects including our participation in the National Wreaths Across America Day and Red Cross Blood Drives. We made major improvements to our building. We increased our ability to assist local Veterans and our community. We expanded our reach and raised public awareness significantly with the help of the Internet and social media. None of this would have been possible without the many volunteers who have donated their time, effort and talents to assist our Post in achieving our goals.

As VFW and Auxiliary members we have dedicated ourselves to a lifetime of service to our Veterans, our Country and our community. Sec 230102 of our Congressional Charter includes charity and education when outlining the purpose of the VFW. Our Mission Statement includes service to our Veterans, the Military and our community. Our Core Values ensure the care of our Veterans and their families and service to our community.

There are opportunities available within our Post for each and every member to lend a hand, share their talents and offer their support. Every act of volunteerism, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, is an opportunity to improve the life of a Veteran within our community and raise awareness for our cause.

Let's make 2017 a banner year for volunteerism. Many hands make work light and there is much work to be done. There are many ways you can make a difference and they are all very simple. Sign up to volunteer. Show up to a monthly meeting and share your ideas. Support Post fund raising efforts -  buy & sell raffle tickets, pasties and tickets to our special events. Bring your friends and family to a fish fry or Sunday breakfast. Follow us on Facebook, like and share our posts. Every contribution is important!

Great things are possible if we tackle them together as a team.
January Volunteer Opportunities for Members & Auxiliary
  • Wreaths Across America wreath removal Saturday, January 14th at noon, Riverside Cemetery, Alma
  • Sunday Breakfast Volunteers
  • Friday Fish Fry Volunteers
  • Saturday January 21st  - Ellen needs a helper for the dart tournament.

Sunday Breakfast & Fish Fry Volunteers are needed for hosting, money collection, serving & clean-up. Our goal for 2017 is to increase volunteer sign up so each member would only have to volunteer 1-2 shifts per year. This should be an easy goal to achieve but we need you! Contact the Post for more information and get your name on the list. Breakfast volunteers contact Cecelia Proctor or Loretta Lombard to sign up.

Post 1454 Serving Our Comrades & Our Community

Picture
"Honoring the dead by helping the living." This sign hangs on the wall in our main dining area and serves as an inspiration and a reminder to all of our mission to assist our comrades, their families and our community in as many ways possible. Each year Post 1454 provides:
  • Direct Assistance to Area Veterans, Active-Duty Military and Families
  • Honor Guard Duties
  • A Memorial Day Flag for Every Veteran's Grave at Riverside Cemetery
  • Memorial Day Ceremonies at Riverside Park and Riverside Cemetery
  • Bereavement Meals for Members and Families of Deceased Veterans
  • Care Packages for Active-Duty Military Personnel Stationed Overseas
  • Information regarding Veteran's Benefits and Assistance Programs
  • Youth Education
  • Community Services
  • Highland Parade Participation
Our Post also works quietly to provide direct assistance to our Veterans and our community. Because of this many may not be aware of the help that is available to them. For instance, did you know Post 1454 has medical equipment available to loan to those in need? Some of the items include:
  • Wheel Chairs
  • Crutches
  • Walkers
  • Toilet Adapters
Picture
There are many ways our Post, Members, Auxiliary and dedicated volunteers can be of assistance. We encourage you to visit Post 1454 to meet our Members and inquire about our many projects and programs. Learn more about our organization and how we can be of assistance. Or find out how you can join us in assisting others!
