Veterans Day is always a special day at VFW Post 1454. Each year we welcome our local Veterans for a luncheon prepared & served by our Post Auxiliary. This year, we were joined by members of the Alma Cub Scouts. The young men of the Alma Cub Scouts were great helpers assisting our Post by setting up the tables and serving meals to our local Veterans and their family members. We would like to thank the Alma Cub Scouts, their parents and Scout leaders for helping us honor our local Veterans. It was an honor to work with these wonderful young Scouts. The boys took turns serving our guests and thanked each Veteran for their service. It was a wonderful experience for our Post and our guests. Thank you Alma Cub Scouts! Once the tables were set, Post Commander Vic Simon shared the meaning behind The White Table also known as the Fallen Comrade or Missing Man Table with the Cub Scouts and gave them each a VFW pin. After all of our Veterans and guests were served, the Cub Scouts joined them to share a meal. The Auxiliary prepared salads, baked ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, corn, dinner rolls and a endless supply of apple & pumpkin pies. We had a great turn-out for our Veterans Day luncheon with over 70 dinners served! Later that evening, several Post Members attended the Veterans Day Ceremony hosted by the Alma Elks Lodge 1400. Post Member & Trustee 3 Year Jeff Humphrey had the honor of introducing another Post Member, our Junior Vice TJ Pierce, who gave a moving speech about his experience as an FO in Afghanistan. TJ is a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient and a huge asset to our Post. We are very proud of TJ. All branches of our Military were represented and Veterans of every branch were in attendance for the ceremony as were active duty members of the Michigan National Guard Bravo Battery 1-119th Field Artillery. Post Member Doug Yarnell represented the Marine Corp carrying the Marine Corp Flag in the Honor Guard. Post Member & Senior Vice Fred "Frits" Fales performed Taps. The Elks put on a wonderful ceremony and served a delicious meal. Each year to conclude the ceremony, Alma Elks Lodge 1400 honors a local Veteran with a Certificate of Honor. This year that honor was bestowed upon our own Post Commander, Victor J. Simon. Vic is a Veteran of the United States Army's 82nd Airborne. Vic served as an MP during Vietnam. Vic has served as our Post's Commander for the past 5 years and is the first Vietnam Veteran to receive the Certificate of Honor from the Alma Elks. We are very proud of our Commander for his dedication and service to his Country, his Comrades and VFW Post 1454. Find out how you can get involved with VFW Post 1454.
